Weekend Burnside Bridge closure for deck joint repairs
The Burnside Bridge will be closed to all users from 11 pm on Friday, October 11 until as late as 5 am on Monday, October 14 to allow contractor Hamilton Construction to complete repairs of deck joints at the east end of the bridge. The work is weather-dependent. The closure will be rescheduled in the event of heavy rain. This is one of the last tasks the contractor needs to complete before the bridge can fully reopen to traffic in November.
During the closure:
- TriMet bus routes 12, 19 and 20 will detour to the Steel Bridge
- Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians can use the Morrison and Steel bridges as alternate routes
The repairs are part of the $19.1 million Burnside Bridge Maintenance Project. The project includes structural, mechanical, electrical, and surface repairs designed to extend the life of the bridge. The bridge is 93 years old.
Multnomah County maintains the Burnside Bridge and five other Willamette River bridges. The county is developing a long-term plan to ensure that the Burnside Bridge can withstand a major earthquake, since it is part of a regional lifeline route. The current repairs are for maintenance only, and will not improve the bridge’s performance in an earthquake.
